Key West’s Bicentennial Celebration Takes Center Stage

Key West, one of the nation’s most iconic and beloved cities, celebrates its bicentennial on March 25, 2022. 200 years ago, on March 25, 1822 - after John Simonton purchased the island from Juan Pablo Salas - Lt. Matthew C. Perry famously drove the American flag into the soil of the newly acquired land of Key West and claimed the city as a part of the United States. To commemorate its 200th anniversary, Key West has planned an epic celebration that will combine the city’s history and its one-of-a kind character into an event that will truly capture the spirit of Key West.

One of the most defining characteristics of Key West is its rich history as the southernmost settlement in the United States. To pay homage to this, the city will host a Key West Heritage Festival on Friday, March 25 at 4:00 in Mallory Square. Kicking off the festival will be a re-enactment of the moment when Lt. Matthew C. Perry claimed the island on behalf of the United States by driving the flag into the island. The event will feature a ceremony honoring the Navy and will include participation from both local officials as well as officials from the United States Navy. Following the festival in Mallory Square, guests can purchase a ticket for the Key West Bicentennial Celebratory Gala, which will feature period costumes, gourmet local food, drinks, and dancing at the Oldest House Museum and Garden. Guests will be transported back to 1822 for a night of unforgettable enjoyment.

The celebration continues on Saturday, March 26 with Heritage Day. Throughout the entire day, attendees can enjoy a variety of entertainment options at Truman Waterfront Park. Local vendors will be selling their wares. Live music will continuously rock the park. Historic lectures and presentations will take place. Family-friendly events will be available, and fresh local food will be featured. To cap it all off, the city will host an environmentally-friendly drone firework show to end the night.

No city does entertainment like Key West, and this weekend is sure to please as Key West celebrates its 200th anniversary!
