Key Colony is a small city within the Middle Florida Keys, located at mile marker 53.5 on the Overseas Highway. The city is connected to the highway via a small bridge. There are nearly 900 permanent residents in Key Colony, though the population swells during the peak season with tourists.
Most of Key Colony Beach lies on Shelter Key. Before the early 1950s, the island was 97-acres of low lying land. Then Phil Sadowski dredged extensively around the island. This dredging increased the land size of Shelter Key and increased its height to six feet above sea level. These changes made Shelter Key ready for development, including the community of Key Colony Beach. Between 1956-1957 the area of Marathon initiated discussions over incorporating the entire area, including Sadowski’s developments on Shelter Key/Key Colony Beach. Sadowski, unhappy with his work potentially being taken over by Marathon, made the moves to incorporate Key Colony Beach as its own independent city. The legislation passed in June of 1957, and Key Colony Beach became a city.
Called the “Gem of the Florida Keys,” Key Colony Beach is a fantastic city. Its amazing waterfront vistas, and expansive waterfront homes make real estate in Key Colony Beach some of the most exclusive and sought after in the Florida Keys.
